How to Read a Scene Breakdown

Unsure of when your child is called to rehearsals? This quick tutorial shows you the ins and outs of reading a scene breakdown and applying that knowledge to the rehearsal calendar.

What is a Scene Breakdown?

A scene breakdown is an overview of all of the scenes and characters written out on a spreadsheet. This allows production staff and actors to easily see which actors are needed and what materials need to be prepared for each scene at a glance.

What Information is Found on a Scene Breakdown?

A scene breakdown contains the title of the show, lists each scene in order followed by the musical numbers contained within a scene and the page numbers where each scene can be found in the script. It also lists out every character in the show, the actor playing said character, and which scenes the character is in.

When is My Child Called to Rehearsal?

The scene breakdown shows exactly which scenes your child is in. Rehearsal calendars list the scene or scenes that are scheduled to be worked on that day. To determine if your child is called first read the scenes to be worked during the scheduled rehearsal. Then look at the scene breakdown to determine if your child is in that scene. If their character is listed in the column for that scene they are called to rehearsal that day. If their character is not listed in the column they are not called to rehearsal that day and DO NOT attend.
